Two more days til my week and a half off from the library, I'm already foaming at the mouth. These past few weeks have just flown by, I've been trying to take it slow, soaking in the cool rainy weather, but every time I blink another hour passes. Though I don't mind, everything has been great lately. With Matt moving in a few months ago, school finishing this past week, and my body on the up, 2011 should be a fantastic year. I'm hoping to get back into shape in the coming months, having had gallbladder surgery two months ago and having to be patient with the slow recovery, my muscles have turned to flab. Not only that, I've tried to dive right back into tennis and have seemed to have strained a tendon in my shoulder in the process. I sure need to get back to the gym and get myself stronger. I do not enjoy paying $30 a month for a gym membership that I never use. #thoughts
This weekend was fun, Matt and I met up with Kara at the Geffen Contemporary (MoCA) in Little Toyko. Everytime I'm in Little Toyko it's raining, maybe I only go during the Winter months? Anyways, it was nice stopping in a few of the shops and checking out all the curious Japanese products. I wanted to buy a fancy wind chime, but resisted, it was hard, they were heavy black cast iron owls. While in one store I noticed this guy shopping an aisle over, he looked very similar to Gavin Rossdale. Once he started talking on his cell phone I knew for sure it was him! Celeb sighting! He looked pretty fancy in his leather jacket, but the shiny patina of celeb wore off when I noticed he was shopping for rice cookers. How dorky! Anyways, we pranced on over to MoCA and saw a really good selection of works from their main collection.
It was nice finally getting to see Untitled (Christmas Flood) by my former instructor. I can't remember if I had seen it before in person, I think I have, but my memory is fuzzy. It was still quite amazing, Xmas in perpetual frozen motion coming at you from all angles. There were many other works in the show that were also amazing, my favorite work might have been Charlie White's OMG LOL BFF -->That shit cracked me up, and the best part is that we were sitting on a bench that was actually a piece on the show! It was this hypercolor heat sensitive sculpture/bench by another former teacher of mine (Ruben Ortiz-Torres), our butt prints left an impression. There was also another show going on in the bigger warehouse section of the museum, it was all colorful visual installations. Kara was overtaken by silliness and did a few goofy pictures.
I think the Blue room really suited her, the red was too harsh and the green was creepy. We checked out a few more works and then had some Korean food afterward. All and all it was a good time and I definitely need to go to Little Toyko more often...and hang out with Kara more too. Which reminds me, we also spent some time on Friday night with Matt's friend from Kentucky, Marby. He was really sweet, we had dinner and went for a few drinks with him. It was really interesting watching him and Matt communicate in ASL. I mean I knew that Matt understood it, and was pretty good, but I was impressed. The two of them were throwing signs back and forth at high speeds. All I could contribute was an occasional thumbs-up or a peace sign...j/k...I resisted.
